Phumelela “The Truth” Cafu got into serious business after he landed in Tokyo, Japan, together with his team ahead of next Monday’s world title fight against Japanese boxer Kosei Tanaka.
Duncan Village-born Cafu is going to challenge reigning World Boxing Organisation (WBO) junior-bantamweight champion Tanaka at the Ariake Arena in Tokyo.
Cafu is in Tokyo together with one of Hot Box Gym trainers Shannon Strydom, Boxing5 Promotions director Larry Wainstein and Mike Altamura from Australia.
“Everything is good, settling in nicely. Cafu is in good spirits, weight is on point and we’re ready to shock the world,” Strydom said on Monday.
The unbeaten Cafu, a former South African junior-bantamweight titlist, had his first workout at the Teiken Gym on Monday morning (SA time). Cafu will go to the fight having notched up 10 wins with eight stoppages and three draws.
Meanwhile, Cafu’s trainer Colin Nathan is going to join him in Tokyo on the 13th after International Boxing Federation (IBF) junior-flyweight champion Sivenathi ‘Special One’ Nontshinga had fought against Masamichi Yabuki in a title defence. – Monwabisi Jimlongo
