Vanquished by Northern Ireland-born Australian boxer Conor Wallace in Australia almost two weeks ago, Asemahle Wellem is fighting yet again as he ‘sneaked’ out of the country to go fight in Tanzania without being cleared by Boxing South Africa (BSA).
Wellem, who left South Africa on Monday, is scheduled to face off against unbeaten Tanzanian boxer Frank Shagembe Katwila at the Super Dome Arena in Dar-Es-Salaam on Boxing Day.
“The only clearance we officially issued was for Wellem to fight Conor Wallace in Australia on 11 December 2024 of which he sadly lost the fight by TKO, round eight. There is no way that he could be fighting on 26 December 2024,” BSA director of operations Mandla Ntlanganiso said.
The 24-year-old Shagembe is a four-fight novice, who made his professional debut in June this year. Based in Songwe, Tanzania, Shagembe has stopped two of his opponents.
Efforts to get a comment from Wellem’s camp proved fruitless as his manager Siya Zingelwa didn’t pick up his cellphone.
