After making three attempts to win the South African featherweight title and came short on all occasions, Cape Town boxer Abdul-Aziz Kunert has decided to move up a division.

Rated fifth in the last ratings, Kunert, who lost to SA featherweight champion Zolisa Batyi at the Orient Theatre in East London in November last year, has moved up to the junior-lightweight.

“Yes, I can confirm that I have decided to move up to the junior-lightweight division. I believe it’s best to move on. I also feel more comfortable in the junior-lightweight. My fight before Batyi was at junior-lightweight and I won by KO,” Kunert remarked.

Kunert first made an unsuccessful bid to win the SA featherweight title in September 2021, but lost on points to former champion Asanda Ginqi at Box Camp Booysens, Johannesbug.

He then challenged Batyi at the Bellville campus of the Cape Peninsula University of Technology (CPUT) in August 2023 and the fight ended in a draw before last November’s loss to the Nxarhuni-born boxer.
