In a bid to resuscitate his stalled boxing career, former South African junior-featherweight champion Ayabonga ‘Jay Jay’ Sonjica is going to dust the cobwebs and return to action in March after being inactive for more than two years.
Duncan Village-born Sonjica is scheduled to come up against former World Boxing Federation (WBF) junior-featherweight champion Thato Bonokoane in a six rounds bout in Johannesburg on Saturday, 15 March.
Sonjica’s fight against Bonokoane will form part of the maiden tournament presented by new promotional outfit Aquila Boxing Promotions (ABP).
“Yes, Sonjica is going to fight in March even he’s yet to sign a contract for the fight,” an Ink Sport source said on Wednesday.
Sonjica has not fought since he suffered a sixth round stoppage loss to former SA junior-featherweight champion Bongani ‘Wonderboy’ Mahlangu at East London’s Orient Theatre in July 2022.
The 33-year-old Sonjica will come up against Bonokoane, who desperately needs a win after losing his last three fights against Tanzanian Kalolo Amiri, Namibians Mateus Heita and Filipus Nghitumbwa.
