It’s going to be a busy night for Johannesburg-based boxing trainer Damien Durandt as he will usher three boxers into war at a Golden Gloves tournament on Saturday, 1 March.
Durandt will man the corners of world champion Jackson Chauke, South African junior-middleweight titlist Brandon Thysse and Bryan Thysse at the Emperor’s Palace in Kempton Park.
Chauke will be making the first defence of his International Boxing Organisation (IBO) flyweight title when he squares up against Ricardo Malajika in the main bout.
On the other hand, Brandon Thysse takes on Namibian Charles Shinima in a World Boxing Council (WBC) Africa junior-middleweight title contest while his younger brother Bryan faces Tuvia Wewege in an eight rounds light-heavyweight bout.
“Preparations are going very well for what’s gonna be a busy night for me. Brandon understands the task at hand. He’s excited to fight for the WBC Africa title,” Durandt said.
“Bryan is also excited and wants to win so that he can fight for the SA title. He wants to make sure that he becomes an SA champion just like his brother”.
Durandt added: “The main man Jackson Chauke, his fight means a lot to him. He wants to prove why he’s the best flyweight boxer in Africa and also one of the best flyweight boxers in the world. He’s going to show why he has not been beaten at flyweight in South Africa in 13 years.” – Monwabisi Jimlongo
