The chairperson of the board of Boxing South Africa (BSA) Ayanda Zamantungwa Khumalo is going to shamelessly push for equal pay for both male and female boxers as boxing stakeholders have converged in East London for a two-day convention, which starts on Thursday and ends on Friday.

This bosberaad, which is going to be held at the International Convention Centre (ICC), was called by the Ministry of Sport in an effort to knock the troubled South African boxing into shape.

Each category of BSA licensees will be represented by two representatives from all the provinces except the Eastern Cape, which will have more people by virtue of hosting the event.

Speaking during an interview with Putco Mafani on Umhlobo Wenenefm on Wednesday evening, Khumalo said: “Women’s boxing is closer to my heart. I have seen that boxers are not getting the same treatment. Male and female boxers don’t earn the same purses, that’s discrimination, legally speaking.”

Khumalo added: “One of the issues we are gonna discuss is how to break boundaries so that female boxers can also get to that same level and be in equal status as their competitors. It’s very important to come to a resolution on that issue. It’s important to deal with these issues.

“We have spoken to everyone in boxing about the problems they are facing. Boxers told us about money issues and lack of equipment. Some told us about a serious issue of women’s boxing.”

Meanwhile, current and former champions have also been invited to the bosberaad where Minister of Sport Gayton McKenzie is going to give a keynote address. – Monwabisi Jimlongo
