Minister of Sport, Arts and Culture Gayton McKenzie has made a promise to fix East London’s Orient Theatre and he said the work is going to begin next week.
McKenzie made the promise while he was making a keynote address at the boxing convention at East London’s International Convention Centre (ICC) on Thursday.
“We will fix Orient next Monday, not in three weeks. If we don’t fix Orient Theatre, we are doomed,” McKenzie said.
The East London venue, which has hosted major tournaments, was flagged by Boxing South Africa (BSA) for its dilapidating condition late last year.
Some of the things picked up were that there were no lights in boxers’ change rooms, holes on the floor closer to the ring, a serious risk to the boxers. BSA also flagged unhygienic conditions, leaking ablutions and taps.
