In a bid to avoid misrepresentation of facts in as far as health matters are concerned, Boxing South Africa (BSA) has taken a decision to begin licensing foreign boxers, who are based in the country.

This decision was revealed by acting BSA chief executive officer Tsholofelo Lejaka as the licensing season for 2025/26 will soon open.

“We took a decision to start licensing non-South African boxers. We used to have a situation where a commissioner is sitting in Zimbabwe, and here’s a boxer that stayed in South Africa for 15 years and must get a clearance from Zimbabwe,” Lejaka said.

“And I must get a clearance from Zimbabwe about this boxer that he has not seen in 15 years. What is he gonna tell me about a boxer he doesn’t know? We need to clean up that governance aspect at continental level.”

Previously, foreign boxers were licensed at their respective countries even though they were based in South Africa, a country which has become a home to quite a number of fighters who come from the SADC region.
