Orlando Pirates became the first team to reach the semi-finals of the Nedbank Cup after they beat SuperSport United 5-4 on penalties at the Old Peter Mokaba Stadium in Polokwane on Saturday afternoon.
This match went to penalties and sudden death after the two sides had played to a 2-2 draw in two hours of football.
Mbekezeli Mbokazi gave the Buccaneers the lead in the 29th minute after Matsatsantsa a Pitori defenders had failed to clear the ball.
And a blunder by Pirates goalkeeper Sipho Chaine allowed Terrence Dzvukamandja to level matters two minutes before the half-time break.
Evidence Makgopa ensured that Pirates ended the first half leading as he restored the Buccaneers’ lead in referee’s added time.
Pirates thought they had won the match, but Gape Moralo had other ideas as he cut through the Bucs defence like a hot knife through butter before equalising in referee’s added time to take the match to extra time.
