At last, Kay B Promotions has secured Sipho Mahlangu’s signature for next month’s vacant South African junior-welterweight title fight against Aphiwe ‘Swagger’ Boyiya.
Number-one rated Boyiya and Mahlangu, who’s eighth in the ratings, are scheduled to square up against each other in East London on Sunday, 27 April.
The title became vacant after former champion Ntethelelo Nkosi relinquished it on Tuesday. Nkosi decided to vacate the title after he got selected to fight in the WBC Grand Prix, which starts in Saudi Arabia next month.
Mtubatuba-born Nkosi had no choice after the Boxing South Africa (BSA) sanctioning committee had ordered him to defend his title against Boyiya or vacate it.
Boyiya, an erstwhile SA featherweight and junior-lightweight titlist, currently holds the Eastern Cape junior-welterweight champion. Both Boyiya and Mahlangu had their last fights against Lindokuhle Dlamini.
Boyiya defeated Dlamini on points when they collided in November and Mahlangu fought to a draw against the same boxer in August last year.
