Hlumelo Gingxana has pulled out of Saturday’s Isizwe Boxing Promotions tournament after his fight, which was said to be an interim Eastern Cape title contest against Maqhawe Damoyi, was turned into an eight rounder.
Gingxana was informed last week that he would face off against Damoyi in an interim Eastern Cape lightweight title fight after his original opponent Siseko Makeleni dropped out of the bill citing an injury.
Gingxana’s handlers were told at the official weigh-in on Friday that the fight had been turned into an eight rounder after the Boxing South Africa (BSA) sanctioning committee declined to sanction Damoyi for the Eastern Cape lightweight title.
And after some deliberations, Gingxana’s handlers decided to pull their boxer out of the tournament, which is scheduled for the King Hintsa FET College in Dutywa.
Damoyi was not sanctioned to fight for the title because he lost his last two fights against Makeleni and Cedric Kadima.
That Damoyi was not sanctioned for a title fight against Gingxana showed how inconsistent the BSA sanctioning committee is. The sanctioning committee sanctioned Damoyi to fight against Makeleni in an Eastern Cape title contest in December 2023 despite coming off a Kadima loss in September of the same year.
