Zimbabwean Minister of Sport Kirsty Coventry was elected as president of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) on Thursday.

Coventry, who won two Olympic gold swimming medals for Zimbabwe, has become the first woman and African to be elected as IOC president.

The 41-year-old Coventry won three medals – gold, silver and bronze – at Athens 2004. She went on to win four medals – one gold and three silver – at Beijing 2008.
