Former world heavyweight champion George Foreman passed away aged 76 in Houston, Texas, in the United States of America (USA), on Friday.
The family of the 1968 Mexico City Olympics gold medal winner, who was born in Marshall, Texas, in the US, announced his passing away.
“Our hearts are broken. With profound sorrow, we announce the passing of George Edward Foreman Sr who peacefully departed on March 21, 2025 surrounded by loved ones,” the family statement said.
Foreman won his first world title when he stopped Joe Frazier in the second round during a fight held in Kingston, Jamaica, in January 1973.
Because of his fistic exploits, Foreman, who lost for the first time in his professional career when he was defeated by the late Muhammad Ali in the fight dubbed the ‘Rumble in the Jungle’ in Kinshasa, Democratic of Congo (DRC), in 1974, was an inductee of both the World Boxing Hall of Fame and International Boxing Hall of Fame.
Foreman made a comeback and won the World Boxing Association (WBA) and International Boxing Federation (IBF) titles aged 45 after he defeated Michael Moorer in November 1994.
He retired in 1997 aged 48, having registered a professional record of 76 wins with 68 knockouts and five losses.
