Abdul-Aziz Kunert is moving to Johannesburg on Monday to finalise his preparations for next month’s fight against Namibian boxer Mateus ‘The Beast’ Heita in Windhoek, Namibia.
Kunert is scheduled to challenge Heita in a World Boxing Organisation (WBO) Africa featherweight title fight, which is slated for the Ramatex Hall on Saturday, 12 April.
The Capetonian will go to this fight against Heita, who is rated 13th by the WBO, following a points loss to South African featherweight titlist Zolisa Batyi at the Orient Theatre in East London last November.
“I’m going to Johannesburg on Monday. And to my knowledge, I’m leaving for Namibia on the ninth. I’m always good and up for this challenge to change my life for the better,” Kunert remarked.
Kunert will become the second South African boxer to face off against Heita in less than a year as the 27-year-old Heita stopped Thato Bonokoane in the second round when they fought last August.
Unbeaten in 13 fights, having registered nine knockouts, Heita stopped Zimbabwean Tatenda Biningu at the Windhoek Country Club Resort in November last year.
Meanwhile, promoter Nestor Tobias has dubbed this tournament ‘Tribute to Founding President Dr Sam Nujoma Boxing Bonanza’ in honour of the late Namibian founding president Sam Nujoma. – Monwabisi Jimlongo
