Father Christmas in the form of Minister of Sport, Arts and Culture Gayton McKenzie came early bearing gifts and dished them out to current and former boxers at a dinner held in Freedom Park, Pretoria, on Monday evening.

And boxing legends wore toothpaste smiles as McKenzie splashed out more than R2,5 million giving each of them R80 000, money some of them never earned during their time as active boxers. The money was deposited into the legends’ bank accounts right away.

“Every legend, all 36 of them including the women, we are giving each of them R80 000 to take home. The female boxers are getting the same amount that the male boxers are getting,” McKenzie said.

While speaking, McKenzie also announced that his department is reviving Boxing South Africa’s benevolent fund, which was looted until nothing was left.

“The benevolent fund has been stolen empty by previous officials. I’m coming for them. In the meantime, the benevolent fund, our department is gonna put R1 million in there,” McKenzie said.

“We will get all the insurance companies to underwrite each an every boxer in this country. When a boxer gets injured, his family must not run around looking for money for medical attention.” – Monwabisi Jimlongo
