A Cape Town boxing gym, which is based at a military camp in Khayelitsha, has been rocked by allegations of fraud and sexual harassment.
Military mandarins are now investigating suspended Welsh Macibela, the manager at the 9th South African Infantry (9SAI) Boxing Club in Khayelitsha, Cape Town, after fraud and sexual harassment allegations were levelled against him.
An Ink Sport source said: “It’s more than a week now since Welsh was suspended for alleged financial mismanagement and sexual harassment of female boxers. Apparently, he was not following army protocols in whatever he was doing. An investigation is now underway.”
Contacted for comment, Macibela said: “People are continually evil out there. There’s a guy who joined the army and doesn’t know how we operate. He alleged that I had used army finances for my own benefit. I have since been suspended and it’s more than a week now.”
Boxers who form part of the 9SAI Boxing Club are well taken off as the army caters for almost all their needs. The club produced two South African champions in Lwando Mgabi and Ntombokuqala Tolashe last year. – Monwabisi Jimlongo
