Fights fans who were looking forward to watching reigning World Boxing Organisation (WBO) junior-bantamweight champion Phumelela ‘The Truth’ Cafu defending his title next month, will have to wait a little longer.
Cafu’s trainer and manager Colin ‘Nomakanjani’ Nathan announced earlier that the Duncan Village-born boxer was going to make the first defence of his WBO crown next month, but that’s not happening anymore.
It was revealed on Friday morning that talks are underway between NO DOUBT Management, who manages Cafu, and Matchroom for a possible mega fight.
“May 24th goes ahead and it features some of South Africa’s great young and world-class talent,” Boxing 5 chief executive officer Larry Wainstein remarked.
“Colin has been working behind the scenes to make a mega fight with Phumelela. Obviously, I’m very excited about bringing boxing to Carnival City and the line-up is amazing. We are looking at doing several title fights on the show.”
The main bout of the Carnival City tournament is going to be an International Boxing Federation IBF (IBF) Continental Africa lightweight title contest between Katlego Khanyisa and Lucky Monyebane.
Lerato Dlamini, Sikho Noqothole, Frank Sotomela, Ishmaeel Kadri, Doron Zinman and Josh Feldman and Hamza Hassim are also going to fight on the tournament dubbed ‘Back to the City’.
