Many boxing followers, especially those from East London are talking about a possible fight between Ayabonga ‘Jay Jay’ Sonjica and South African junior-featherweight titlist Siyabulela ‘Showtime’ Hem.

But Sonjica, a 2012 Olympian, reckons that his Duncan Village homeboy should be left alone to enjoy his time as a national champion.

The former SA junior-featherweight title holder is making a serious comeback following more than two years of inactivity. And to prove that Sonjica is really coming back, he won his second fight in less than two months as he registered a fourth round stoppage of Sanele Maduna from Ladysmith during an eight rounds bout at the SunBet Arena in Time Square, Pretoria, on Thursday.

“Let Hem enjoy himself as a champion. He’s still young. It’s not that I don’t want my title back, but I think a fight against me is going to be avoided,” Sonjica said.

The 33-year-old Sonjica’s win over Maduna came less than two months since he outpointed Thato Bonokoane in Sandton, Johannesburg. Sonjica, who was dethroned by Bongani ‘Wonderboy’ Mahlangu in July 2022, dropped out of the ratings due to inactivity. – Monwabisi Jimlongo
