A cut above Emanuel Navarrette’s left eyebrow resulted in a premature ending of his fight against Filipino opponent Charly Suarez at the Pechanga Arena in San Diego, United States of America (USA), on Sunday morning, South African time.
And because the fight was controversially halted before the beginning of the ninth round, the Mexican retained his World Boxing Organisation (WBO) junior-lightweight title by a technical decision as he was leading in all three score cards.
Lou Moret’s score card read 77-76, Pat Russell had Navarrette winning by 78-75 and it was 77-76 according to Fernando Villarreal’s score card.
The California State Athletic Commission said that the cut was caused by an accidental clash of heads whereas Suarez’s punch caused it.
