While most South Africans will be commemorating Women’s Day across the country, Phaphama Rhonorhono and Wassim Chellan will be exchanging blows to decide who’s the best welterweight boxer in South Africa.

With only four fights in the paid ranks, Rhonorhono is set to face off against Chellan in a vacant SA welterweight title contest in Cape Town on Saturday, 9 August.

This bout, which pits an Eastern Cape boxer against his Western Cape opponent, was confirmed by Cape Town-based promoter Jack Brice of Jackie Brice Boxing Promotions (JBBP).

“We are looking at the ninth of August at the military base here in Wynberg,” Brice said.

Rhonorhono and Chellan get an opportunity to fight for the vacant title after it was relinquished by former champion Keanu Koopman without defending it.

Koopman, who defeated Bonke Duku to win the title which was vacant in December last year, moved up one division to the junior-middleweight two weeks ago.

Meanwhile, Rhonorhono from Mthatha has an unblemished record of four wins with all victories coming from stoppages compared to Chellan, who has registered nine wins with four knockouts and a single loss. – Monwabisi Jimlongo
