Having moved his training camp to Johannesburg last month, Mthokozisi Ngxaka will soon make the first defence of his South African minimumweight title.
Ngxaka, who is trained in Johannesburg by former world champion Zolani Tete, is set to defend his crown against Thinumzi Gqola, the number three rated boxer in South Africa.
Gqola stopped Malakhi Sobolo in the first round in March and he gets an opportunity to face Ngxaka as Siphamandla Baleni and Siphesihle Sityo, who are rated first and second respectively, are not eligible to challenge for the SA title by virtue of having lost their last fights.
“It’s a mandatory defence. We are ready to honour pur mandatory obligation in July. The fight is going to happen though we have not signed contracts yet,” Ngxaka’s manager at All Winners Boxing Club Tengimfene said.
Ngxaka became the SA minimumweight champion following a fourth round stoppage of Thami Luthuli at the Orient Theatre in East London more than two months ago.
Meanwhile, Gqola is already in camp preparing to face off against Ngxaka even though he’s also yet to sign the fight contract. – Monwabisi Jimlongo
