National title hopeful Aphiwe ‘Swagger’ Boyiya’s handlers are meeting Boxing South Africa (BSA) at noon on Thursday after the fistic regulator had written to the boxer giving him five working days to respond to its letter.

BSA wrote to the Amalinda-based Boyiya earlier this week asking him to respond and state whether he’s still interested in fighting for the vacant South African junior-welterweight title or not.

Initially, Boyiya signed to face Sipho Mahlangu in a vacant title fight last month, but the duel couldn’t go ahead after Sibusiso Zingange’s handlers put a spanner in the works arguing that he was the one who should have met the East London boxer inside the ring as he’s rated number two in South Africa.

Writing to Boyiya, BSA director of operations Mandla Ntlanganiso said: “We write to you in your capacity as the mandatory challenger for the South African junior-welterweight title, as reflected in the latest Boxing South Africa (BSA) ratings. We wish to draw your attention to Section 17(3)(b) of the boxing regulations. Through this correspondence, we kindly request that you inform Boxing SA of your immediate plans regarding your status as the mandatory challenger.

“In our effort to ensure consistent activity within the ratings and to provide every rated boxer with a fair opportunity to contest national titles, Boxing SA has intensified its monitoring of the mandatory challenge status across all weight divisions. This process is undertaken in line with our regulations and aims to confirm the intention of each mandatory challenger to pursue their opportunity.”

The letter added: “Through this correspondence, we kindly request that you inform Boxing SA of your immediate plans regarding your status as the mandatory cahllenger. It is our intention is for the SA junior-welterweight title to be contested by leading contenders on or before 31 August 2025, in order to ensure each weight division has a champion.”

Ink Sport can reveal that Boyiya has already signed a fight contract with Kay B Promotions to take part in a vacant SA junior-welterweight title contest. However, there are challenges that they are facing as Zingange has also signed with TLB Boxing Promotions to fight for the same title.

Kay B Promotions and TLB Boxing Promotions are yet to find each other and decide who will promote a vacant SA junior-welterweight title fight between Boyiya and Zingange. – Monwabisi Jimlongo
