Khayelitsha-based boxer Lwando Mgabi lost his South African junior-bantamweight title without throwing a jab or a punch on Friday afternoon.
Mgabi lost his title after he failed to make the the required weight for the junior-bantamweight division ahead of his fight against Sechaba Zuma at the Estcourt Town Hall in KwaZulu-Natal on Saturday. After he was given two hours to make the weight, Mgabi could only manage to tip the scales at 52,65 kilograms instead of the required 52,16kg.
With Duncan Village-born Mgabi having failed to make the weight, his opponent Zuma is now the only one eligible to win the vacant title.
Mgabi, who trains at the 9th South African Infantry (9SAI) Boxing Club in Khayelitsha, Cape Town, was going to make the first defence of the SA title he won after he outpointed Sihle Jelwana from Komani in Cape Town in September last year.
