Boxing South Africa (BSA) has sent out a circular calling for purse bids for the vacant South African junior-welterweight title fight between Aphiwe Boyiya and Sibusiso Zingange.
BSA was forced to call for purse bids after parties representing Boyiya and Zingange failed to find each other.
With an application fee of R500, the purse bids, which close at 16h00 on Friday next week, are open to all promoters except those who owe BSA.
The BSA circular said: “Promoters must not owe Boxing SA, must have a national or international licence and be able to host the bout on or before 31 August 2025. Each submission must include the proposed purse amounts, proposed date and venue of the tournament as well as confirmation of a broadcast agreement, if any.”
The circular added that a promoter who wins the purse bid must within the allotted number of days deposit 15 percent of the total purse offer. Failure to comply will result in the promoter forfeiting his or her right to promote the contest and the opportunity being passed on to the second highest bidder.
Boyiya, who once held the SA featherweight and junior-lightweight titles, is promoted by Mzi Booi’s Kay B Promotions while Joyce Kungwane of TLB Boxing Promotions promotes Zingange, a former national junior-lightweight champion.
Problems started after Boyiya signed with Kay B Promotions to stage the bout and Zingange signed a fight contract with TLB Boxing Promotions.
Initially, Boyiya had signed with Kay B Promotions to contest the vacant SA junior-welterweight title against Sipho Mahlangu last month. But the fight couldn’t go ahead after Zingange’s handlers fought hard, arguing that he was eligible to face off against Boyiya by virtue of being rated second in the BSA ratings. – Monwabisi Jimlongo
