Erstwhile national champion Sibusiso Zingange has not abandoned his desire to face off against Aphiwe Boyiya in a vacant South African junior-welterweight title fight.

This is so despite the former SA junior-lightweight champion being rumoured to have lined up an African Boxing Union (ABU) title fight on Saturday, 26 July. If Zingange has signed for an ABU title fight, then that will somehow render the purse bids for a bout against Boyiya useless.

“We still want to fight for the SA title against Boyiya. As of now, we are just waiting for Boxing South Africa to announce the winner of the purse bids. We don’t care where the fight will be held because we want to win the SA title,” Thami Malinga, who trains Zingange, said.

Purse bids for a possible fight between Zingange and Boyiya closed on Friday last week. Boxing South Africa (BSA) called for purse bids after camps of the two boxers couldn’t find each other.

Initially, Boyiya was due to face off against Sipho Mahlangu at the Orient Theatre in East London last month, but the fight was called off after Zingange’s handlers fought very hard, arguing that he was the one who should be given an opportunity to clash against the Amalinda-based boxer by virtue of being rated number two. – Monwabisi Jimlongo
