The date extension for purse bids for the vacant South African junior-welterweight title fight between Aphiwe Boyiya and Sibusiso Zingange proved to be a futile exercise.
Ink Sport has gathered that not a single promoter showed interest on the fight at closing date at noon last Thursday following Kay B Promotions boss Mzi Booi’s decision to pull out of the purse bids.
Initially, Booi was the only bidder before the board of Boxing South Africa (BSA) decided to extend the closing date following a meeting with the National Professional Boxing Promoters Association (NPBPA).
Now BSA chiefs have been left with egg on their faces something which forced them to reach out to Booi in an effort to establish why he decided against bidding for the fight.
“They called Mzi last week and asked why he withdrew from the purse bids. It’s clear that Mzi’s withdrawal didn’t sit well with them,” an Ink Sport source said on Monday.
Ink Sport has learnt that Booi has since thrown his weight behind TLB Boxing Promotions boss Joyce Kungwane, who is waiting for BSA to sanction the vacant title fight, which is going to be held at the Emperor’s Palace in Kempton Park, Ekurhuleni, on Saturday, 26 July.
