A plan to take former South African junior-bantamweight champion Lwando Mgabi’s boxing career back to the top has been set in motion as he signed a management contract with award-winning manager Mlandeli Tengimfene on Wednesday.

Mgabi, who was born in Duncan Village, East London, lost his SA title on the scales before his fight against Sechaba Zuma in Estcourt, KwaZulu-Natal, early in June. Mgabi stopped Zuma in the fifth round.

“I have signed Mgabi as his manager. I was approached by his team and they told me that they want me to manage him and make him a champion again,” Tengimfene said.

Part of the agreement between Tengimfene and Mgabi is that the boxer will remain in Cape Town where he’s trained by Siyabonga Mafika and Andile Madubedube.

“We have agreed on what will happen going forward. He will still be trained by the same team,” Tengimfene, who won the 2017 Manager of the Year award, remarked.

Confirming the deal, Mafika said: “Nothing has changed now that he’s going to be managed by Bro Mla. Lwando is going to continue training with us here in Cape Town.”
