Sharadene Fortuin’s ring return has been thrown into doubt following the injury picked up by her opponent Kudakwashe Chiwandare during a football match in Zimbabwe.

The reigning South African female bantamweight champion was scheduled to square up against the Zimbabwean boxer in an African Boxing Union (ABU) SADC bantamweight title contest at the Country Club Harare, Zimbabwe, on Saturday, 23 August.

But Chiwandire, a former interim World Boxing Council (WBC) female junior-featherweight titlist, sustained a tibia fracture during a football match between her team Scottland and Harare City Cubs in the Women’s Northern Region Soccer League.

“Sharadene is very disapointed, however, she has not stopped training as we were promised a replacement for the same date. I am hoping they do, eventually, find a replacement for the same date and title. For now, we are just training as if nothing has changed,” Fortuin’s trainer Lonwabo Witbooi said.

Fortuin from Seymour in the Raymond Mhlaba Municipality, Eastern Cape, has not fought since her victory over another Zimbabwean boxer Patience Mastara in Polokwane in September 2023. – Monwabisi Jimlongo
