Shakur Stevenson retained his World Boxing Council (WBC) lightweight title after he outpointed Mexican boxer William Zepeda in a battle of southpaws.

The American’s dominant performance resulted in the judges scoring the fight 118-110 on two scorecards and 119-109. Stevenson took his record to 24 wins while Zepeda has won 33 times and lost once. 

On the other hand, Subriel Matias beat Alberto Puello by a majority decision to win the WBC junior-welterweight title. 

And Hamzah Sheeraz stunned Edgar Berlanga with a fifth round knockout in a WBC super-middleweight elimination bout.

Sheeraz has now become the mandatory challenger to reigning  WBC super-middleweight champion Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez.

Bantamweight prospect Katsuma Akitsugi defeated Filipino boxer Jonas Sultan, who was making a comeback, by a unanimous decision. 

Two judges scored the 99-91 and the third judge had the Japanese-American winning by 98-92. Akitsugi stretched his record to 13 wins with three stoppages while Sultan dropped to 19 victories, 11 knockouts and eight losses.

Saturday, 12 July 2025 (South African time)

Venue: Madison Square Garden, New York, United States of America (USA)

In an epic trilogy for the WBC, IBF and WBO female junior-welterweight championship, Katie Taylor defeated Amanda Serrano for the third time. 

Taylor won the fight by a majority decision victory with the scorecards reading 95-95 and 97-93 on two of them.

Meanwhile, Alycia Baumgardner is still the undisputed junior-lightweight champion following a unanimous decision win over Jennifer Miranda. 

The WBC, IBF and WBO champion won by 98-92 on two scorecards and 97-93 on the third scorecard.
