Mthatha-born boxer Mthokozisi Ngxaka’s first defence of his South African minimumweight title has been rescheduled to Sunday, 17 August.
Initially, Ngxaka was pencilled to defend against Thinumzi Gqola on Sunday, 3 August, in a fight, which pits two Eastern Cape boxers, a champion and a challenger, outside their province.
Now Ngxaka and Gqola are going to trade blows at the Portuguese Hall in Johannesburg at a tournament promoted by Glove and Glory Boxing Promotions.
Formerly called Bonglez Boxing Promotion, the promotional outfit has undergone a name change to Glove and Glory Boxing Promotion.
“We would like to officially announce that Bonglez Boxing Promotion has undergone a rebranding and will now operate under the new name Glove and Glory Boxing Promotion,” Glove and Glory boss Bongani Dlamini said in a statement on Monday.
“This change comes as part of an internal restructuring across the Bonglez Group of Companies, aimed at streamlining our operations and ensuring that each of our business entities is clearly distinguishable by name and purpose. While our name has changed, our commitment to developing and promoting the sport of boxing remains stronger than ever.”
Dlamini added: “We continue to stand for excellence, discipline and community development through sport. We sincerely thank all our fans, boxers, partners and sponsors for their continued support during this exciting transition.
“All current sponsorships remain valid under the new brand and we warmly welcome new sponsors and collaborators to join us as we write the next chapter in South African boxing history. Let’s make history together, inside and outside the ring.”
Meanwhile, Ngxaka won the national crown after he stopped Thami Luthuli in the fourth round at the Orient Theatre in East London almost four months ago.
On the other hand, Gqola qualified to challenge for the SA title following his first round stoppage win over his Duncan Village homeboy Malakhi Sobolo in March. – Monwabisi Jimlongo
