Remembering women’s boxing only in August will be a thing of the past if Boxing South Africa (BSA) board member Rina Subotzky has her way.
Subotzky has been tasked with leading the Women in Boxing project as BSA wants to make sure that female boxers get regular action.
“We would like to see boxing as a catalyst for talent for every girl child. We will work hard to bring boxing back to schools. Imagine where SA rugby would be if there was no school rugby,” Subotzky said during a Women in Boxing launch in Johannesburg on Friday.
The launch was attended by Shereen Hunter and Zanele Mdodana, who are members of the Women in Boxing committee. Another member of the committee Keletso Totlhanyo sent an apology as she was held up elsewhere.
BSA chief executive officer Tsholofelo Lejaka as well as the regulator’s director of operations Mandla Ntlanganiso were also in attendance. Boxer Asanda Simelane and Sazisiwe Simon also graced the launch.
Female boxing will take centre stage with action all round between this month and February next year. Already, eight female boxers will be in action in a seven-bout tournament, which is going to be promoted by Golden Gloves tournament at the Emperors Palace in Kempton Park, Ekurhuleni, next Saturday.
