World champion Ricardo Malajika preaches discipline as the clock is ticking towards his fight against Filipino boxer Jayson Mama at the Emperors Palace in Kempton Park, Ekurhuleni, on Saturday evening.
Malajika, who is on a seven-fight winning streak, has not lost a fight since his defeat by Sikho Nqothole in April 2022. The winning streak includes capturing both the International Boxing Organisation (IBO) flyweight and junior-bantamweight titles.
And now Malajika makes the third defence of his IBO junior-bantamweight crown as he meets Mama.
“With me, weight has not been a problem. It’s all because of discipline. If you want something in life, then you have to be disciplined because discipline will take you far,” Malajika remarked.
“I’m dedicated at what I do. I love what I do. I don’t look down on my opponents. I will definitely give my all like I always do. If I see the target, I will pull the trigger and take him down.”
Malajika will be fighting for the first time since he dropped to the flyweight division earlier this year and dethroned former IBO champion Jackson Chauke at the same Kempton Park venue.
Meanwhile, Cape Town boxers Simamkele Tutsheni and Caleigh Swart will test each other’s fistic skills when they meet in a vacant IBO All-Africa junior-featherweight title contest in the same bill. – Monwabisi Jimlongo
