Phumelela ‘The Truth’ Cafu celebrated the fruits of his labour when he held a housewarming party at his new home in Amalinda, East London, on Saturday.
Cafu, who lost his World Boxing Organisation (WBO) junior-bantamweight title to American boxer Jesse ‘Bam’ Rodriguez last month, hosted a housewarming party for his family led by his mother Sisanda as well as his friends.
After losing to Rodriguez in Texas, United States of America (USA), Cafu returned to South Africa and presented his mom with a five-bedroom house in Amalinda.
“Yeah man, it is a dream of mine fulfilled. I am grateful to my mom, this is my way of showing her that I love her,” the former SA junior-bantamweight champion remarked.
Cafu, who celebrated his 27th birthday a week after losing to Rodriguez, added: “Look man, I am still young and my next dream that I am chasing is becoming a two-time world champion. I know I can do it.”
Boxing 5 Promotions chief executive officer Larry Wainstein as well as Cafu’s trainer and manager of NO DOUBT Management Colin Nathan together with close friend Mandla Simanga flew down from Johannesburg to be part of the housewarming party.
The story of the house for Cafu’s mom began when he was fighting against Japanese boxer Kosei Tanaka during a WBO junior-bantamweight title contest in Japan last October. It was when Nathan reminded Cafu about why he was fighting and the promise he made to his mom.
That moment went viral and made Cafu shift gears in the contest, leading him to record a split decision vvictory. It was that win, which led to last month’s massive duel against Rodriguez.
This one is a life time achievement better than any world title. Congratulations are in order champ.
