It’s a fight that KwaZulu-Natal boxer and South African middleweight champion Phikelelani ‘Stinger Khumalo has been yearning for as he’s going to face off against DonJuan van Heerden.

Khumalo, who pulled out of Saturday’s fight against Yunus S’phiwe Mbhele following a hand injury, will meet Van Heerden in a winner takes all clash at the Emperors Palace in Kempton Park, Ekurhuleni, on Saturday, 29 November.

“The fight against Van Heerden is on and I’m very happy about that. I have always wanted to fight against him,” Khumalo said.

Speaking about the latest on the hand injury he picked up at training, Khumalo said: “I’m getting better now and the pain has eased a bit. I think I will be able to use my hand in the next few days.”

Khumalo is yet to fight since he halted John Bopape’s dominance over KwaZulu-Natal boxers, defeating him on points at the Estcourt Town Hall, KwaZulu-Natal, in March this year.

Meanwhile, Van Heerden’s African Boxing Union (ABU) middleweight title will also be at stake during the Khumalo fight.

Van Heerden became the new ABU champion after Dean Promnick failed to answer to the bell at the beginning of the 10th round during their fight early last month. – Monwabisi Jimlongo
