The chief executive officer of the South African Football Association Lydia Monyepao revealed on Thursday that FIFA had opened an investigation on SAFA and Bafana Bafana midfielder Teboho Mokoena.

This followed after Mokoena played in a 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifier against Lesotho earlier this year. Mokoena should have sat out that game because he had already received two bookings, which meant an automatic one match suspension.

“We have received communication from FIFA about the investigation they have launched in terms of the Lesotho match which Teboho Mokoena was fielded,” Monyepao said.

“So, we are preparing our response to the FIFA disciplinary committee, which is ultimately required of us as an association. Look we are not really worried about that.

“I think our focus right now is to ensure Bafana Bafana gets maximum points, come October, because whatever happens, whether there is docking of points or whatever, if we get six points come October, nothing else matters.”

Bafana, who are on top of their group with 17 points from eight matches, will lose three points should FIFA find them guilty.
