Beaven Sibanda is in high spirits after he underwent a successful operation on Tuesday following an injury, which forced him to pull out of a fight against highly-rated Filipino boxer Joey Canoy.
Sibanda sustained an Achilles injury earlier this month while he was preparing for his IBF International minimumweight title defence against Canoy, which was scheduled for the Emperors Palace in Kempton Park, Ekurhuleni, on Saturday, 4 October.
“I underwent a successful operation on Tuesday. I’m on a plaster for two weeks. The pain has eased now and I’m feeling okay,” Sibanda said.
Harare-born Sibanda won the IBF International minimumweight title after he stopped Richard Garde from the Philippines in the fifth round early in July.
The 23-year-old Sibanda is rated sixth by the World Boxing Council (WBC), ninth in the IBF ratings and 14th in the World Boxing Organisation (WBO). He has nine wins with three knockouts and a loss. – Monwabisi Jimlongo
