Legendary Brian Mitchell is going to be one of the trainers who will man world title hopeful Siyakholwa Kuse’s corner when he fights against Filipino boxer Melvin Jerusalem in less than two weeks’ time.
Kuse from Mdantsane is set to challenge World Boxing Council (WBC) strawweight champion Jerusalem at the Araneta Coliseum in Baranguay Cubao, Quezon City, in Manila, Philippines, on Wednesday, 29 October.
It’s going to be the first time that Mitchell, a former World Boxing Association (WBA), International Boxing Federation (IBF) and Ring junior-lightweight champion, works in a corner together with Fernandes.
“Manny Fernandes and I are going to the Philippines with Siyakholwa Kuse. I’m gonna work in the corner as a trainer with Manny. It’s gonna be the first time ever that Manny and I work together in the corner,” Mitchell said.
“The last time we worked in corners together we were opposing trainers. I had Martin Jacobs, a former South African lightweight champion, and he was training Isaac Hlatshwayo. Isaac beat Martin that night. Manny’s son Richard, a former professional boxer, is also going and will be working with us in the corner.”
Mitchell has confirmed that he together with Kuse, Manny and Richard are scheduled to leave South Africa for the Philippines on Tuesday next week.
“We’ve got a send off on Tuesday. Siyakholwa is going to become the first South African strawweight boxer to win a WBC world title when he wins it in two weeks.” – Monwabisi Jimlongo
