Three South African boxers who took part in the WBC Grand Prix in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, reached the end of the road after they lost their fights in the semi-finals of the tournament on Sunday evening.
A bad day for South Africa started when Ntethelelo Nkosi was stopped by unbeaten Colombian boxer Carlos Utria in the first round of a junior-welterweight bout.
And a body shot in the fifth round put an end to Bekizizwe Maitse’s dreams of reaching the final as he lost by a stoppage to Mexican opponent Brandon Mejía Mosqueda.
Keaton Gomes, who reached the semi-finals after registering stoppages in the first three rounds of the tournament, lost on points to Bosnian Ahmed Krnjic even though he did very well during the fight.
