With an unblemished record of three wins from the same number of fights, Sanele ’16V’ Sogcwayi travels to Cape Town on Friday morning for Saturday’s fight against veteran boxer Sabelo Ngebiyane, knowing very well that he has the full backing of his promoter and Golden Gloves managing director Rodney Berman.
Having only made his professional debut in March this year, Sogcwayi has done very well so far, stopping two of his three victims. Now, Sogcwayi faces a battle-scarred Ngebiyane in an all-Eastern Cape six rounds bout at the Cabo Beach Club, V and A Waterfront, in Cape Town.
Sogcwayi travels to Cape Town together with former World Boxing Association (WBA) and International Boxing Organisation (IBO) featherweight champion Simphiwe ‘V12’ Vetyeka, who’s going to bark instructions from the corner during the Ngebiyane fight in the absence of his regular trainer Ncedo Cecane, and his manager Thembelani Hlombe.
Cecane, a former South African flyweight champion, is not travelling to the Mother City as he will be leading his other boxer Lubabalo Kweyi to war when he defends his Eastern Cape junior-lightweight title against Bandile Daniels at the Lillian Ngoyi Hall in KwaZakhele, Gqeberha, on Saturday.
“V16 is pivotal to Golden Gloves’ long-term ambitions. He fights in Cape Town this weekend, but next year he’ll be a full-time Emperors Palace fighter,” Berman said.
“He’s one of the most exciting talents to emerge from the Eastern Cape in years. He has completed his apprenticeship, having won three on the bounce. I’m excited to watch his journey.”
Mdantsane-born Sogcwayi returns to the same venue where he stopped Eric Zwane in August. And this is the same venue where Ngebiyane drom Komani lost to Kaya Mlata six months ago.
