A fight which boxing trainer-cum-manager Lonwabo Witbooi fought very hard for, is finally happening as his boxer Athenkosi Thongwana will challenge Siseko Teyisi at the Orient Theatre in East London.

Thongwana will collide with reigning South African junior-flyweight champion Teyisi in the second last tournament of the year on Friday, 19 December.

This mandatory title contest came as a result of Witbooi’s uncompromising attitude in his fight to ensure that his charge got to challenge for the SA title, rightfully so.

Teyisi, with “help” from the Boxing South Africa (BSA) board, staved off a challenge from Thongwana. However, there was no place to hide for Teyisi after fighting against Filipino boxer Elmar Zamora in September as he went into that fight after he had already made a commitment to face Thongwana in an SA title defence.

Now the fight is happening as Thongwana makes a second challenge of the same title. He lost to Mpumelelo Tshabalala when he first challenged for the national crown in March 2023.
