South African champion Khaya Busakwe will unfortunately have to wait until the new year before he can make amends for his loss to Nigerian boxer Sikiru Shogbesan.
This is so because Busakwe’s fight, which was going to be an SA lightweight title defence against number one contender Mbuyiseli Ndukwana from Knysna in the Southern Cape, has been cancelled.
This fight was scheduled to take place at the VW Pavilion in Kariega, Eastern Cape, this coming Friday. It was cancelled after Nyusa Productions boss Mbulelo Mfama failed to deposit boxers’ purses into the bank account of Boxing South Africa (BSA).
“We trained very hard for this fight. We are on weight and now this. This is bad, but there’s nothing that one can do,” Busakwe said.
Busakwe’s last defence of the SA title he won after he defeated Lusanda Komanisi at the Orient Theatre in East London in March 2023 was a 10th round systoppage win over Sinethemba Blom in Midrand in September 2024.
Meanwhile, Central Western Jabavu-born Busakwe was a victim of a controversial decision, which resulted in him losing to Shogbesan in Kagiso, Krugersdorp, four months ago. – Monwabisi Jimlongo
