A national title, which was taken away by a KwaZulu-Natal boxer from his Eastern Cape counterpart is needed back in the province as Bongani Fule challenges South African featherweight champion Lindelani Sibisi.
Makhanda-born Fule, who is the Eastern Cape featherweight champion, sent a challenge form to Boxing South Africa (BSA) on Friday as he wants to snap Sibisi’s nine-fight winning streak and return the SA title to the province.
“We would like to officially submit the challenge form for the South African featherweight title held by Lindelani Sibisi,” Fule’s manager Andile Mshumpela said in an email to BSA.
Fule is fresh from a split decision win over Jeff Magagane at the Guild Theatre in East London two months ago while Sibisi defeated Indian boxer Keisham Luckysun Singh in a vacant IBF International featherweight title fight held in Estcourt.
Meanwhile, two of the last four SA featherweight champions came from the Eastern Cape and current SA junior-lightweight champion Asanda Gingqi was dethroned by Magagane, who later lost the title to Zolisa Batyi.
Nxarhuni-born Batyi surrendered the crown to Sibisi following a 10th round stoppage loss in front of his home fans at the Orient Theatre in East London last May. – Monwabisi Jimlongo
