It’s finally happening as a contract which gives Bongani ‘King Killer’ Fule an opportunity to become the first South African champion from Makhanda since December 2020 has been signed.

After signing the fight contract, Fule is now set to travel to Estcourt in KwaZulu-Natal on Saturday, 28 March, to attempt to wrestle the SA featherweight title away from reigning champion Lindelani Sibisi, who dethroned Zolisa Batyi at the Orient Theatre in East London in May last year.

“We have agreed with Sibisi’s promoter. We agreed on the purse as well as the date of the fight, which is the 28th of March in Estcourt. We will go there and take the title. We have been preparing for this fight knowing very well that it’s gonna take place. Sibisi’s management and our team are on the same page,” Fule’s manager Andile Mshumpela said.

Fule will go to his next fight following a split decision victory over former SA featherweight titlist Jeff Magagane at the Guild Theatre in East London last November.

On the other hand, Sibisi’s last fight was a win over Indian boxer Keisham Luckysun Singh in an IBF International featherweight title contest in Estcourt in October.

Meanwhile, Makhanda has not had an SA champion since former national welterweight titlist Mziwoxolo Ndwayana was dethroned by Thulani Mbenge at the Kagiso Memorial and Recreation Centre, Krugersdorp, in December 2018.

Ndwayana had won the then vacant title after he overcame Shaun Ness at the Portuguese Hall in Turffontein, Johannesburg, in September 2018. – Monwabisi Jimlongo
