The disciplinary committee of the Confederation of African Football (CAF) has come down hard on Senegal and Morocco players and officials following unsavoury incidents during the final of the Africa Cup of Nations tournament more than a week ago.
Teranga Lions coach Pape Thiaw has been suspended for five official CAF matches and fined $100 000 (about R1,5 million) for unsporting conduct and bringing the game into disrepute. Thiaw ordered his players to leave the field after match referee Jean-Jacques Ndala had awarded Morocco a penalty during the final.
Senegal players Iliman Ndiaye and Ismaila Sarr were each suspended for two official CAF matches for unsporting behaviour towards the referee.
The CAF DC fined the Senegalese Football Federation a total of $615 000 (about R9,7 million) for different discretions. The Senegalese were fined $300,000 (about R4,7m) for the supporters’ improper conduct, which CAF ruled brought the game into disrepute.
They were also handed a $300,000 (about R4,7million) fine for the players and technical staff’s unsporting conduct, which violated CAF principles of fair play, loyalty and integrity. The Senegalese Football Federation was also fined $15,000 (R236 104,47) because of five players who had received cautions during the final.
Meanwhile, the CAF DC rejected Morocco’s protest where the Moroccans had alleged that the Senegalese had violated articles 82 and 84 of AFCON regulations.
Atlas Lions captain Achraf Hakimi has been suspended for two official CAF matches, with one match suspended for one year, for unsporting behaviour.
His teammate Ismaël Saibari received a three-match suspension on official CAF matches for unsporting behaviour and was also fined $100,000 (just over R1,5m).
The Royal Moroccan Football Federation was fined $200,000 (just over R3,1m) for stadium ball boys’ inappropriate behaviour during the final.
The Moroccan Federation was also fined $100,000 (just over R1,5m) after players and the technical staff obstructed the referee’s work when they invaded the VAR review area. And the DC fined Morocco $15,000 (R236 104,47) after Moroccan supporters used lasers during the match.
