Even though he doesn’t want to sound like he’s underestimating his next opponent, reigning South African junior-bantamweight champion Moyisi Booi reckons that he will be comfortable when he squares up against Peruvian-born Argentine boxer David Nunez.

Just over two months since he successfully defended his SA title, Booi is going to face off against Nunez in a vacant International Boxing Federation (IBF) Intercontinental junior-bantamweight title fight at the Orient Theatre in KuGompo City on Friday, 24 April.

And in his last fight at the KuGompo City venue in December, Mdantsane-born Booi easily dispatched former SA junior-bantamweight champion Lwando Mgabi in the fourth round.

“I’m doing well at training preparing for the fight. I must admit, though, that I don’t know much about David except that I watched some of his videos. I picked up that there’s nothing special about him. I can even stop him because he’s a wild boxer,” Booi said.

Shocked by a fourth round stoppage loss to unbeaten Zimbabwean boxer Ndabezinhle Phiri in September 2024, the 22-year-old Booi came back strongly and recorded stoppage wins in his last four fights. Actually, only two of Booi’s fights went the full distance as he has registered eight victories with six knockouts and a loss.

On the other hand, the 31-year-old Nunez, who stopped Venezuelan opponent William Flores in November, has chalked up nine wins with four stoppages and two losses. – Monwabisi Jimlongo
