A Cape Town boxing trainer has taken an extraordinary step, going the legal route to recover money he claims he paid to a Western Cape promoter so that his boxer could get a fight.
Boxer Brucely Mugetse’s trainer Mitchell Mutava has taken boxing promoter Allen Chizungu of Maxim Boxing Promotion to the Small Claims Court in Cape Town demanding that he pays back the purse money he deposited into his bank account.
Apparently, Mugetse was due to have fought at Chizungu’s tournament at the Vibrant Sports Centre in Ottery, Cape Town, last month. However, that bout never took place.
“I have known Chizungu for a long time. I paid for the bout so that my boxer could fight in Chizungu’s tournament. I paid him R4 000 only to find that there was no opponent for my boxer,” Mutava said.
“He promised me saying that Boxing South Africa was going to pay the money back to me. Two weeks came and no money was paid to me. I later learnt that Chizungu never paid the money to BSA. He then became arrogant whenever I asked him to pay back the money. This guy is bad, he even charges boxers if they want to fight in his tournaments.”
Chizungu dismissed Mutava’s allegations alleging that there’s a group of people in Western Cape boxing circles who don’t like him.
“Look, there are people who are destroying my promotion, this includes the BSA provincial manager. I really don’t know who Mitch is,” Chizungu said.
“The boxers are poor. I promote boxers from the townships and they don’t have money. These people who are talking now want me to look bad.”
Contacted for comment, BSA provincial manager in the Western Cape Mzoli Tempi laughed off Chizungu’s allegations.
“I have nothing to do with the money he owes,” Tempi said.
