KwaZulu-Natal will once again host the first tournament of the Rise of Women in Boxing Series when Nomfundo Malinga’s Sugarboy Boxing Promotions stages a show in Ladysmith on Friday, 30 August.

This was confirmed by Boxing South Africa (BSA) board member and Women in Boxing committee chairperson Nande Mheshe.

Initially, the plan was to have the first tournament in the Western Cape. However, it was discovered that the Western Cape was not yet ready to host the series and that gave KZN an opportunity to stage the tournament. Western Cape female promoter Yolanda Landore is yet stage a tournament.

“The first event is going to be held in Ladysmith, KwaZulu-Natal, on the 30th of August. The series was supposed to start in the Western Cape. However, the Western Cape was not ready as the female promoter was gonna do her first tournament. She’s fairly new in hosting a tournament,” Mheshe said.

Only the Free State and the Western Cape didn’t host the Rise of Women in Boxing Series tournaments during the 2023/24 financial year.

Meanwhile, a Women in Boxing workshop is going to be held in Ladysmith a day after the tournament where mental health and nutritional issues are going to be tackled. – Monwabisi Jimlongo
