The president of the South African Football Association (SAFA) Danny Jordaan had added his voice mourning former Premier Soccer League (PSL) chief executive officer Trevor Phillips.
The PSL announced on Monday morning that Phillips, who was popularly known as the British Bulldog in South African football circles, had passed away.
The Briton was PSL’s first CEO and spent more than two years at the organisation before leaving for Britain. He returned to the same position in 2002 and left after five years.
‘‘We would like to convey, as SAFA, our heartfelt condolences to the Phillips family, friends, and all those he worked with. This is a sad
day for football, not only in South Africa but globally as Mr Phillips had worked throughout the world, imparting his knowledge in growing the sport. We hope the Almighty will give the grieving family strength and hope in this time of mourning,’’ a statement from Jordaan said on Monday.
The PSL has also announced that a moment of silence will be observed ahead of this week’s DStv Premiership and GladAfrica Championship matches.
