AmaZulu coach Benni McCarthy is unhappy after his players missed a number of clear goal scoring chances during Usuthu’s goalless draw with Maritzburg United in a KwaZulu-Natal derby at the King’s Park Stadium in Durban on Sunday afternoon.
The former Cape Town City coach said that his players let him down when it mattered most – in front of goals as they only picked up a point from the match.
‘‘I don’t think we had difficulties in breaking them down. We had difficulties in putting the ball in the net,’’ said McCarthy.
‘‘We dominate, we play well, we create chances. Unfortunately, our finishing, our lack of putting the ball in the net has let us down. We get a whole lot of chances, still no goals. This is not helping the cause. The players must start being more confident and calm.’’
Usuthu have collected two points from a possible nine in their last three matches drawing with Bloemfontein Celtic and the Team of Choice and losing to Kaizer Chiefs.
‘‘The way we played, the way we were structured, the way we were organised, we restricted them. (Judas) Moseamedi and (Thabiso) Kutumela were nowhere because we know how they play. In the second half (Ernst) Middendorp took off Kutumela because the counter was not working,’’ McCarthy said.
‘‘We just gave them a point, everyone says a point is good, but you have to feel somewhat disappointed. Chances are becoming more harder and harder now, teams are gunning for points. We just made it very difficult for ourselves. This was one of the biggest messed up opportunities for us. I’m not happy because we let three points slip, we only managed to get one.’’
On the other hand, Team of Choice coach Ernst Middendorp seemed content with the point they picked up from the match.
‘‘We are only two points from the bottom, always important to look into your blue print. We had our second clean sheet, excellent goalkeeping today. In the end, I can sleep well with this one point,’’ said Middendorp.
Usuthu, who have collected 11 points from 10 matches, are 10th on the Premiership table and the Team of Choice are three places below them with only two points separating the two sides.
