Life as a female boxer in South Africa is not rosy and is full of hardships.
The fact that female boxers don’t get much action inside the ring is something, which continues to bother former South African and world champion Bukiwe ‘Anaconda’ Nonina.
The 29-year-old lass from Dutywa in the Eastern Cape has not laced her gloves in 16 months because no promoter has shown interest in offering her a fight.
“It’s difficult, very difficult. I have not fought in a very long time,” she said.
“I want to fight, but nothing is coming up. It’s bad because most promoters don’t look at us female boxers when they plan their tournaments.”
Nonina, who is the only South African female boxer to have defended her national title five times, has not fought since win over Tanzanian boxer Flora Machela in September 2019.
“I will return to training next week even though I don’t have a trainer,” Nonina said.
Nonina spent a few months training at Harry Ramogoadi-Manaka’s VIP Boxing Academy in Benoni, Ekurhuleni, in 2020.
